Fayette Co. EMS Director Moving To LGISD Post
District Also Hires New Tech Director
The La Grange School Board made two management hires Monday.
The board approved the hiring of Fayette County EMS Director Sharon Muzny as the school’s new Director of School Operations and Safety.
Technology teacher Dave Bennett was promoted to the school’s Director of Technology, replacing Michael Mach, who is retiring.
Muzny will officially replace Director of Operations, Neal Miller, whose last day is June 30.
But now that job title is Director of Operations and Safety, a key distinction said Superintendent Bill Wagner.
“Safety of our students is the most important thing and it has become even more important to address. With Sharon, having served 13 years as director of EMS, we feel very fortunate to get her,” Wagner said. “Neal has been with the district since 2000 and was a La Grange graduate and has been very committed to the district and we wish him well in his retirement.
“He’s looking forward to helping Sharon with the transition.”
Muzny, herself a LHS grad, has been with EMS here for 16 total years.
“As I reflect on my time with Fayette County EMS I am thankful to have been entrusted with the most sensitive times in peoples’ lives,” Muzny said. “This trust has personally influenced me and allowed an expansion of my faith through the first-hand witness of suffering - in both tragedies and miracles. That is profound impact that I could not have received elsewhere.
“I will forever remain thankful to the men and women that I have served alongside including the County’s firefighters and first responders. My heart and soul have been poured into the department and I have now reached the ‘shelf-life’ of what is essentially a 24/7 position.
“I am extremely excited to get the opportunity to use my experience and education in this new role. The new job duties are parallel to my current role and I think I’ll bring a unique perspective to LGISD and especially look forward to applying a first responder’s eye to the ever-changing school safety initiatives.”
As safety becomes more important in school settings, technology has, and will continue to be a focus, with Bennett now leading that effort.
“Dave has done an outstanding job as a teacher, and we’re very excited about what he will bring,” Wagner said. “ Michael Mach has been director of technology since 2016, and has done an outstanding job. We hate to lose him, but he’s retiring and we understand.”
Bennett said he’s excited and ready to go.
“My goal is to strengthen the infrastructure of technology for the district so that staff can maximize the use of impactful technological resources in the classroom without feeling the frustration of frequent interruptions to its use,” Bennett said.
“In our world, demonstrated especially in the current COVID-19 situation, technology is paramount to student success. Whether a teacher is delivering at-home instruction, using data to monitor student mastery, or students are exploring the benefits of tech through Google classrooms, computer programming, or foreign email pen pals, technology is integral in their education. I’m looking forward to making everyone’s use of it as beneficial and seamless as possible.”
