An 18-wheeler hydroplaned and rolled over on Interstate 10 east of Schulenburg Tuesday afternoon, blocking eastbound traffic for nearly two hours.

At least eight automobile accidents including one fatality happened in Fayette County over the span of two days on Tuesday, July 28 and Wednesday, July 29.

The first wreck happened Tuesday morning around 9:30 a.m. on Interstate 10 between Bryant Road and FM 2672 west of Schulenburg. The wreck involved a pickup truck that rearended a moving van. The driver of the pickup later died from his injuries.

Schulenburg Volunteer Fire Department responded. According to Fayette County EMS Coordinator Josh Vandever, a helicopter landed and prepared to fly the driver away for hospital treatment, but the driver was not stable enough for helicopter flight. Vandever said the driver was transported by Fayette County EMS, and the medical staff from the helicopter joined EMS personnel inside the ambulance to help treat the man on the way to the hospital. Vandever said the man succumbed to his injuries later that day.

Then around 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Schulenburg firefighters responded to another accident on Interstate 10. This time, an 18-wheeler hydroplaned and ended up on its side, blocking both eastbound lanes. The accident happened just east of the US 90 and Interstate 10 intersection east of Schulenburg. No one was seriously injured, but the wreck blocked eastbound traffic for about two hours.

There were also wrecks reported that day on US 290 in northern Fayette County, on FM 2145 in the Nechanitz area and a minor accident in the La Grange Walmart parking lot.

Shortly before 8 a.m. on Wednesday, an accident on Interstate 10 happened near the Fayette-Gonzales county line west of Flatonia. That wreck involved a white panel van. Details were not available in time for this publication.

Around 11 a.m. on Wednesday, a Bugmobile pickup slid into the median on SH 71 near Bordovsky Road west of La Grange. The pickup rolled over in the median, severely injuring the driver. Fayette County EMS transported the driver to Dell Seton Hospital in Austin. DPS Trooper April Galvan-Usher investigated the accident. She said the driver was in serious but stable condition when the ambulance left the scene.

Usher said she could not determine why the driver drifted off the road.
