DPS Names Suspect in Fatal 2019 Hit-And-Run
Texas Department of Public Safety identified a suspect in the hit-and-run crash that killed Byler Lehmann last year near Warda.
An arrest warrant has been issued for Ulises Arzate Gudino, 41 of Mexico. DPS Sgt. Jeremy Weiser said Gudino was the driver of a Penske truck that Lehmann crashed into on the early morning of April 4, 2019.
An updated crash report from the DPS stated that the wreck happened around 2 a.m. that day. Lehmann was heading south on US 77 in a white 2017 Ford Mustang. Gudino was driving a yellow 2017 Volvo truck tractor pulling a trailer. Gudinowas driving south ahead of Lehmann. The crash happened near the Warda Post Office.
The report stated that the Mustang crashed into the left side of the trailer, causing major damage to the roof and cab of the Mustang. The Mustang traveled a short distance and came to rest in the parking lot of the Warda Post Office. The report said Lehmann had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.126 at the time of the wreck, which is above the legal limit of 0.08.
The 18-wheeler fled the crash scene, the report stated.
“No witnesses were at the crash scene and none have been identified or have come forward,” the report stated.
The report went on to say that Gudino “is currently in Mexico and unable to be located for interviewing to confirm the details of the crash.”
Trooper Austin Lynch investigated the wreck. Weiser said Gudino was working for Altman Plants in Giddings at the time of the crash.
A Fayette County Deputy unknowing passed by Gudino’s truck that morning while responding to the wreck. A camera on the deputy’s patrol car captured a blurry image of the truck as the two vehicles crossed paths. Weiser said that image was sent to the DPS Crime Lab in Austin for enhancement. Through the enhanced image, investigators were able to determine that the 18-wheeler was a Penske lease truck. DPS contacted Penske, which was able to track down the truck and driver via GPS records.
Weiser said Gudino is believed to be working for a trucking company in Mexico and that he would be arrested if he ever tries to enter the United States at a border crossing. If anyone knows Gudino’s whereabouts, please report it to Sgt. Weiser at the DPS Office in Giddings by calling (979) 542-1726.
