Death Likely Caused When Driver Fell Asleep on I-10

A truck driver died on Interstate Aug. 13 after running into the median and striking a tree.

According to an accident report from DPS Trooper Josh Berger, the accident happened around 4:09 a.m. between the 665 and 666 mile marker east of Flatonia. Berger’s report stated that 35-year-old Isaac Perales of La Feria was driving a 2007 Freightliner Columbia truck pulling a 2008 white Utility trailer. The rig was traveling west in the inside lane. The rig entered the center median and traveled a short distance before striking a large tree with the front center of the truck

The truck and trailer became engulfed in flames and burned completely. Berger’s report stated that Perales died in the crash. Berger wrote in his report that he believes the driver fell asleep while driving due to the time of day and no evidence indicating that the driver attempted any evasive actions to avoid the crash.
