COVID Closes Tax Collector Office

The Fayette County Tax Assessor-Collector Office closed its doors this week due to staff members who were exposed to the coronavirus. The office instituted a 10-day quarantine starting last Friday and plans to reopen on Monday, Aug. 24.

Employees at the Tax Assessor-Collector’s Office, which primarily handles motor vehicle registrations, remain available to conduct business over the phone.

Fayette County Emergency Management Chief Craig Moreau told the Record on Wednesday that one staff member in the office tested positive for the coronavirus. He said no other staff members have tested positive.

“We pretty much know the (infection) came from outside the office,” Moreau said.

Moreau said the staff member who tested positive did not have contact with the public and he did not believe there was any exposure to the public.

The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles has temporarily waived all vehicle title and registration requirements until further notice due to the COVID-19 crisis. Law enforcement officers in Texas will not issue tickets for expired registrations during this time.

Once the DMV removes the waiver, Texans will have 60 days to renew registrations.
