Coronavirus Claims Life of Another Local

Coronavirus claimed another victim from Fayette County on Wednesday, May 13.

Fayette County Emergency Management Chief Craig Moreau told the Record Wednesday afternoon that the victim was a man in his 70s from Fayetteville.

“He was reasonably healthy, active and very social prior to becoming sick,” Moreau said.

Moreau said the man had been hospitalized outside of the county “for some time” before succumbing to the Covid-19 disease.

Officially the Covid-19 has now killed two people in Fayette County, the other being a Schulenburg man three weeks ago.

Additionally a woman from Carmine also died of Covid-19 three weeks ago, but her death was classified in Washington County because she had been living in a nursing home in Brenham.

In other local coronavirus news, Fayette County had more recoveries than active cases as of Wednesday afternoon.

According to the County’s case count, there have been 25 confirmed cases, 12 recoveries and two deaths, leaving 11 active cases.

Governor Greg Abbott announced on Monday a statewide initiative to test all nursing home residents and staff. Moreau said he and County Judge Joe Weber have been in discussion with other officials about how the nursing home testing will proceed in Fayette County.

“I’m very happy about this,” Moreau said. “The goal is to first test the most vulnerable, and the most vulnerable are the elderly in our nursing homes.”

Moreau said the County is also monitoring the spike in cases around the Flatonia area. Pct. 3 had 10 cases as of Thursday morning. That area of the county did not have a single case two weeks ago.

“There is definitely a lot of focus and attention on that area right now,” Moreau said.
