The hard-working people of Fayette County wake up early in the morning, but before they haul that first load of gravel, or hammer the first nail, or pour that big slab of concrete, they need some fuel. For this, they turn to the humble but mighty breakfast taco.

The Record’s Jeff Wick and Andy Be

hlen are traveling to the taquerias of Fayette County to review their offerings. Last Friday, we visited Taqueria Sergio’s in La Grange. As you walk inside this little red building west of the old River Bridge in La Grange, you’ll notice the place is pretty laid back. You can order at the counter, or you can sit at a table and someone will take your order. If the place is busy, you’ll probably end up sharing a table with others. There’s a menu, but if you look around, you might see some regulars eating dishes that don’t appear on the menu.

We ordered a barbacoa taco with cilantro and onions and a chorizo, egg and cheese taco, both wrapped in flour tortillas, along with two cups of coffee.

Overall impressions

Andy: “I have to be honest, Sergio’s is one of my favorite taquerias. Their menudo is the standard by which I judge all others. Everything is fresh and cooked to order. The tacos are smaller, which I like, because you can order two or three and enjoy some diversity. And that green sauce – watch out.” Jeff: “It’s a great place to sit down and eat. They play some good music in the background. Also they have two sauces, which allows you to dress your tacos how you prefer. Just make sure you order something to drink if you have the green sauce.”

Barbacoa w/ Cilantro & Onion

Andy: “Yes, please, I’ll have

another.” Jeff: “The lime wedge is a really nice touch. You get the freshness of the cilantro and onion. I think this is my favorite.”

Chorizo, Egg and Cheese

Jeff: “I’m not the biggest fan of eggs in breakfast tacos, but this has the perfect balance of chorizo and eggs.” Andy: “I like how they don’t beat the eggs to death. They’re just slightly scrambled with streaks of white and yellow.”

Cost

The barbacoa taco cost $3.75. The chorizo, egg and cheese cost $3.25. With two cups of coffee, our total bill was $11.27. Check back with us in next Friday’s paper for our review of Taqueria RioVerde in La Grange (AKA Taco Shack). Don’t let us miss out on your favorite tacos.
