American Legion Quade-Werchan Post 338 Holds American Flag Disposal Ceremonies

The American flag is one of our nation’s most recognizable symbols. Yet, too often when a flag has become torn or tattered beyond repair, faded or simply outlived its usefulness, disposal is not done in accordance with directives and the proper dignity owed to it. The United States Flag Code outlines the proper etiquette stating, “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.”

In keeping with this code, and in honor of Flag Day (June 14th), the American Legion Quade-Werchan Post 338, located in Round Top, held a flag disposal ceremony on Saturday, June 13. Over the past year the post members collected flags in need of disposal at their donation bin located at their facility. After collecting 12 American flags, one Texas flag and one POW/ MIA flag, Post Commander Lyn Reavis lead the ceremony conducted by the officers of the post and assisted by two members of the American Legion Axillary. Due to concerns regarding COVID-19 the ceremony was conducted with the minimum number of participants.

Other officers present and participating were 1st Vice Commander Marvin Wessels, Financial Officer Frank Williams and Adjutant Bruce Bockhorn. Members from the American Legion Axillary assisting in the proceedings were Phyllis Reavis and Carobeth Bockhorn.

The adjutant presented the flags as being deemed appropriate for disposal. Inspection and certification was made by the 1st vice commander and the financial officer. Following the prescribed procedure, the attendees then honored our nation’s symbol with the rendition of ‘To The Colors’ and a closing prayer prior to the disposal of the collected flags. Following the ceremony time was spent visiting and reflecting on the history of our nation’s flag.

The post will continue to accept flags for future disposal at their collection bin located under the covered porch of the American Legion Hall, 1503 N. State Highway 237, Round Top. The public is invited to stop by and leave their American and Texas flags under the following conditions required for disposal:

• The flag should be removed from its location and no lanyards or attachments should be included with it.

• The flag should be folded in the customary triangular manner.

American Legion Quade-Werchan Post 338 will conduct future disposal ceremonial procedures. These ceremonies will be made known to the public and all are welcomed to attend.
