Abbott Faces Growing Criticism Over Mask Order

A movement in the Texas Republican Party to censure Governor Greg Abbott over his handling of the COVID-19 crisis has spread across the state. The Fayette County Republican Party might soon weigh in on that debate.

The movement began a week and a half ago in Ector County, home to Odessa, where the County Republican Party there voted to censure Abbott, claiming that he violated core Republican principals, including separation of powers, free enterprise and personal responsibility by issuing statewide orders such as the face mask mandate. Several other county GOP affiliates followed suit, including Montgomery, Denton, Harrison, Hood and Llano counties.

The Record asked Fayette County GOP Chairwoman Deborah Frank whether Republicans here would consider a similar censure resolution.

“One executive committee member asked me to consider calling a meeting to discuss this issue,” Frank said. “I have discussed it with our Vice Chair and I plan to review the censure documents submitted by several other counties.”

Frank said she would not consider or schedule such a meeting until after the Republican Party of Texas state convention next week.
