State Fatality Figures Here Drop from 14 to 11

Fayette County Emergency Management Chief Craig Moreau reported that a man in his 80s from Pct. 4, the Schulenburg area, recently died from COVID-19. That’s the seventh death that Fayette County officials attributed to the coronavirus.

The Texas Department of State Health Services now reports 11 coronavirus deaths in Fayette County. That’s down from the 14 deaths that the state was reporting last week. Still, a discrepancy of four deaths remains.

“I am confident that we have seven deaths right now,” Moreau told the Record on Tuesday. “The others are unknown at this point.

“My position is until we can definitively say it was death directly a result of or largely a result of COVID, then it should not go on our local tracker,” Moreau said, referring to the COVID information dashboard on the County’s website, co.fayette.tx.us. “That’s the only fair thing to do. If someone has traumatic death and they happen to have COVID, surely it’s not a COVID death. It’s important for people understand what the risk factors are. We don’t need any misinformation.”

Moreau also reported that nursing homes and assisted living centers will soon get access to a rapid coronavirus test that can be tested inside the facility with quick results, typically within 10 to 15 minutes. He said the new test has some limitations, and nursing home staff will need training to administer the tests. However, Moreau said the new tests could greatly help with quick detection inside those facilities.

According to the latest numbers from Fayette County, there are 18 confirmed positive cases and an additional nine probable positive cases. So far, 364 people have recovered from COV-ID-19.

Thirteen people who at one time tested positive have been lost to follow-up.
