A Memorial Day Like No Other

The coronavirus pandemic chilled many people’s plans for Memorial Day.

The veterans organizations in Schulenburg cancelled their annual Memorial Day Service scheduled for next Monday. Koenig-Bellville Funeral Home in La Grange will hold a virtual service (details below).

“This county is very good at celebrating Memorial Day,” County Judge Joe Weber said in an interview with the Record on Tuesday. “People realize the importance of it. Memorial Day is not about the living. We have Veterans Day for that. Memorial Day is about those who gave up their lives, so often at a young age.”

Coronavirus restrictions will likely dampen some of the revelry that takes place most years on Memorial Day, such as trips to the beach and backyard barbecues.

“Most of the time people think of Memorial day as a party day, a day to have a good time,” Weber said. “And that’s fine, because I think veterans and the families of those of those who lost their lives would want their loved ones to participate in those things.”

However, Weber said the pandemic might encourage people to celebrate Memorial Day in a more solemn manner by visiting cemeteries and attending church services.

“This special event is held each year to remember and honor our courageous troops who have served and risked their lives for our freedom,” the funeral home said in a statement released Tuesday.
