Co. Emergency Management Coordinator Also Juggling Firefighting Job in Houston

Fayette County Emergency Management Coordinator Craig Moreau continues to hold a second job as a captain in the Houston Fire Department as he fulfills his duties amidst the pandemic here.

The County hired Moreau back in November 2019. He has served as a Houston firefighter for the last 18 years. Moreau said his other job in Houston does not conflict with, but rather complements, his duties as the emergency manager in Fayette County. Moreau said he plans to work two more years for the Houston Fire Department and then retire as a firefighter.

Moreau said Houston firefighters typically work eight 24-hour shifts each month.

“At this point, I’m at the end of my career as a firefighter,” he said. “I have enough vacation and holiday time, and I’m able to give away a large portion of my shifts. I do go to Houston occasionally.”

Moreau said he typically works 40 to 50 hours a week for the County, sometimes more. Moreau said his HFD job provides him with extra training that he is able to use working for Fayette County.

“It’s a mutually beneficial arrangement,” he said. “It hasn’t been a hindrance at all. If anything it has benefited the County, with all the classes and training I’m able to take.”

County Judge Joe Weber told the Record on Tuesday that there are other EMCs around the state who also work as fulltime professional firefighters.

“I hired him because he’s the best fit for emergency management here,” Weber said. “He’s soon to retire in Houston and he is able to do both. He gives us the full 40 hours here and more.”
