Lessons on Love From a Valentine’s Box

F ebruary . . . the month of love. We know this because the Hallmark channel tells us so. I mean, we have just detoxed all the Christmas movies from our souls and then “Wham!” The Hallmark company and their compatriots hit us with cards and candies everywhere we turn. Just in case you forgot, this month is about love, As a kid, I remember choosing the theme of my Valentine’s Day cards for school. Did I want a sports theme, a movie theme (Star Wars), a TV theme (Dukes of Hazzard), or some generic theme? I had to ensure the box of cards I bought had enough for everyone in the class—even for those classmates who did not deserve a note of friendship appreciation from me. They deserved a note, but not appreciation. Anyway, this is about love. . .

Not a Good Idea

To the Editor: Having been part of several “experimental” school schedules over many years (yes I’m old) from 4 day weeks to year round school I think back to a basic common sense problem with all of them. Anytime the school schedule is different from the work schedule of the community you have a problem, ‘nuff said.

Is It Too Late For Fake?

To the Editor: At the recent town hall meeting hosted by Round Top’s very impressive mayor I learned of the plan to tear down the building we normally call the Town Hall (Precinct Courthouse.) That building centers the town’s square with its wonderful trees and park-like environment. She expressed relief that it was not protected by historic designation.

Trump’s Retribution

To the Editor: He told us he wanted revenge. He failed to mention how it would hurt so many folks who were and are only doing their jobs.

Pot-Bellied Stove and a Newborn Calf

It was 1947. I was about 4 years old when I accompanied my Dad and Mom to the creek bottom to watch as they helped a cow having trouble calving. This was my first time witnessing this and an incident I will never forget. It was freezing, bitter cold that late evening, and the cow was down to where she couldn’t be pushed or chased into a bam.

Voucher Bill Passes Senate, Arrives in House

C apital Hkhlimm A bill to implement school vouchers in Texas sailed through the Senate largely on party lines last week and now awaits consideration in the House, the Austin American-Statesman reported. House Speaker Dustin Burrows, RLubbock, said he believes there are enough votes in that chamber to pass the legislation, which was defeated a half-dozen times in 2023 by a coalition of Democratic and rural Republican members.

Keep 5 Days

Do more with less? That lie doesn’t work in the business world and it won’t work in schools. Yes teacher and student morale may improve by going to a four-day-a-week plan like La Grange ISD is considering, but even as thousands of schools nationwide have gone to this model, I’ve yet to fmd a single study that says education of kids improves under a four-day-a-week plan.
