Longevity

I always thought I’d still be around at this age. One granddad lived to 92, an aunt to 94, and a grandmother to 103.

Road Safety Ignored

To the editor: After some careless drivers alarmed the residents of Bruno Rd, we asked the Precinct #4 commissioner how we could implement a speed limit. He explained the process and we got a petition together for the request for a 35 mph speed limit.

Backwards Progress

To the Editor: I’ve been a member of the Do Your Duty Club (DYD) for 49 Years. I am sad and ashamed of the Town of Round Top to terminate our Square Fair.

Faith-Based Fiction and the Facts

To the Editor: Ms. Rodibaugh’s letter from last week’s LTTE section misrepresents both the facts of the Minneapolis church shooting and the broader implications of gun violence in America.

Round Top’s Well-Oiled Machine

To the Editor: Vintage 1960s-70s Gravely Tractors have been an integral part of most of my life. They are a remarkable example of American ingenuity and engineering excellence.

Big Gravel & Good Stewards

To the Editor: The sand and gravel business is big business in Texas and getting bigger. In 2021, the San Antonio Express-News called it a $10 billion Texas industry.

Remember When?

September 5-9, 1975 A night-long investigation of a purse snatching in Smithville late Monday afternoon resulted in the apprehension of four subjects. Fayette County Deputy Sheriff Vastine Koopmann said a Smithville woman had laid her handbag on her car hood while talking with a neighbor, when a young male jumped out of a green car that had cruised by earlier.

Choose Life

The book of Ruth is an incredible story about a woman who is thrust into dire circumstances and comes face-toface with famine and death. It begins, not with Ruth, but with Naomi. It is Naomi’s family who faces famine in the land of Israel and travels to Moab. It is Naomi who loses her husband and later her two sons. It is Naomi who changes her name to Mara, which means bitter. Who can blame her? She has lost everything. Her life has been turned upside down. She has nothing left to live for. She is consumed with grief.

County Fairs of Old

Taking nothing away from our modern day county fairs I can say “They just don’t make them like they used to.” At least not from a little country boy’s point of view. I believe in those late 40s and 50s the county fair was a little more inclined to cater to the younger generations. As country kids growing up on the local farms we had very little access to any entertainment except maybe seeing a western movie now and then. So whenever that fair time came around we couldn’t wait to go. It usually lasted three or four days, but my dad would go for only one evening and night. So I had to take it all in one trip.
