That Little Voice

The rush is on. Santa is over feeding his reindeer, polishing the shiny nose of Rudolph, frantically getting the gifts to be delivered in order, and wondering how many toys, clothes, electronics, and do-dads will fit in his ever-increasing sized sleigh.

Countdown to Christmas

When most people hear the word “countdown” they think of space exploration. The final countdown before the rocket lifts off to space.

Christmas with Big Mamma - Part III

It was only a week later that I walked into our back door after making a trip to the Rexall (I was out of shampoo and envelopes) when I saw the red light blinking on our answering machine. The kids gave it to me for Mother’s Day several years ago and I still sometimes forgot to check for the blinking light. I pushed the button for the message, still holding my Rexall sack in my other hand. It was Effie Bingham who lived down the hill from Big Mamma. She had walked up to get Mamma to help her with the “Star Pattern” quilt she was making for her granddaughter’s wedding shower. She didn’t get an answer when she knocked, but she could hear Old Jake on the other side whining. Letting herself in, she found Mamma on the floor of the kitchen with a pot of Campbell’s Chicken Noodle Soup burning on the stove.

Getting prepared to travel for the holidays is a daunting task. It’s not just the packing, but its deciding what to pack, how to pack, my destination, how long I’ll be gone, the paper work I need to fill out before I even get to the airport, the lines for boarding, and…oh yes, I forgot, the mask, the shields, the no food, the fights on board, and accidental gun fires.

Christmas Time Fun on the Farm

When Christmas came around, shooting firecrackers was what I enjoyed the most! These days they call them fireworks but in my day they were called just plain firecrackers. We lived about five minutes’ walking distance from a beer joint called Dobbins’ Place.
