That Little Voice

I lost my breath and my voice over my travels through the Swiss Alps. The 12 day trip was breathtaking, and my return with jetlag apparently was voicetaking, but well worth both experiences.

Guns and Compost

To The Editor: Not again! In the last edition of Letters to the Editor, John Mikus states that under the last “assault weapons” ban, “the number of victims killed by these weapons dropped precipitously.” The conclusion of the 2004 Koper case study of the 1994 temporary ban clearly states that even with any benefit from the ban “…there has been no discernible reduction in lethality and injuriousness of gun violence.” It is simple, anti-gun legislation has an impact only on law abiding citizens. Criminals don’t obey the law.

Why Did This Happen?

To The Editor: The Letters to the Editor in the June 10 edition of the FCR were all focused on the aftermath of the Uvalde school shootings and full of opinions on what should be done to prevent future incidents. However, Craig Brestrup asked the key question: “…why so many American young men are so desperately alienated and violent…?” I believe I can answer that question.

Why We Admire Zelenskyy

At a recent gathering, someone mentioned he had never heard anything negative about this man who has appeared center stage on the world’s radar since February. Another guest chimed in that it was most unusual for a foreign “politician” to be admired by so many other countries than his own. My mind keeps going back to this conversation as I pray for the brave people of Ukraine and their leader and I’ve decided to put some thoughts down on paper, though I have never written a political opinion before. Both Larry Jackson and Jeff Wick have taught me the danger in this.

REMEMBER WHEN?

June 9-13, 1972 La Grange’s John (Bubba) Riehs, the southpaw pitcher-first baseman for the bi-district champion Leopards, was drafted in the 27th round by the Baltimore Orioles of the American League. Riehs was tapped on the second day of the major league free-agent draft.
