Where is Lincoln’s America?

To the Editor:

Abraham Lincoln was born an American. He revered his country’s freedoms and principles of self government. And he served it as president and healer when the schisms of those ideals — in a world ordered by the tyrannies of subjugation — were rendering its failure. Lincoln trusted in the power of light in a dark world.

Today we face Lincoln’s culture of freedoms embroiled once again in those same schisms. Yet now they are dressed in a culture of technical expertise — the fiction that wisdom is better dispensed than perceived, that subjugating our lives to the social prowess and attractive tyrannies of technically leveraged media is superior to free speech, free markets and success based on merit, fairly and honestly judged.

Today we need another Lincoln, just like the one born two centuries ago — someone wise, strong and willing to lead the country back to its founding ideals. America as a nation and as a people will survive only if we understand its principles of freedom and self determination, and our mandatory obligation as its protectors to demonstrate our conscious respect for its institutions.

No nation, devoid of culture, will suffer more, if we ourselves do not have the courage to believe and speak as Abraham Lincoln did in his moment. This moment of truth is ours. Every flaccid parroting of nonsense, every unspoken support for the brave and the wise, is just another tear in the proud fabric of Lincoln’s America. And it’s our America, too.
