What’s this Artificial Intelligence?
It is bad enough that I am still learning how to use my cell phone and the computer. Now, the news reporters are talking about the dangers of artificial intelligence. Are they trying to scare the citizens of the world?
What is artificial intelligence? Artificial intelligence is perceiving, synthesizing and inferring information demonstrated by machines opposed to intelligence displayed by humans or other animals. That description is a little deep for us country folks. I prefer this description; artificial intelligence is the ability of a computer or controlled robot to perform tasks commonly associated with an intelligent being.
I’m sure many of you remember when computers finally were available for sale to the normal American citizen. For a while, I thought if I press a wrong key, the thing would blow up on me and then I would be in a pickle. I soon learned that the computer was safe to use and I did not have to be afraid of it harming me in any way. I also learned how to turn the thing off if it absolutely aggravated me to the point I was ready to pull my hair out. Now, I just ignore my laptop and I feel in control. I’ve told many of my friends, several times, if they see a laptop flying by their window, I got totally sick and tired of the thing and it was time to get rid of it.
The same thing with my cell phone. I still haven’t learned how to properly put an app on my phone or how to transfer one piece of information or a picture to another area on my phone. I’m just happy when my calls or texts reach the designated person or persons.
Why does modern technology have to be so complicated? And, now there is talk that artificial intelligence could possibly eliminate mankind. How can something a person creates be smarter than the person who made it? It’s enough to make a person go cross-eyed.
Artificial intelligence, AI, can cause several issues besides eliminating mankind. It can create a lack of privacy. That’s already happening now as many of you know. A person’s identity can be stolen which can wreak havoc on a person’s life such as stealing their social security number, insurance details, driver’s license info, etc. AI could cause digital, political and physical security problems. We would then need more people trained in cybersecurity. Artificial intelligence could cause a threat to personal safety. Just think if our police force was automated. It could fall into the wrong hands and our society could be ruined.
I remember when the crew of Apollo 11 landed on the moon. Seeing all those computers in the control center fascinated me. I thought those men and women were the most intelligent human beings on earth because they could get a crew to the moon and back. They could talk the talk of immense and highly intelligent equations and mathematical figures way beyond my intelligence. I’m lucky to add two plus two on my calculator. Now, the talk is about artificial intelligence and what could happen and what may happen.
Whatever happened to the simple joys of life? Homemade ice cream, a walk in the park, picnic with the family, checking out a library book, watching a baseball game, etc. Yes, our society is constantly inventing but isn’t this artificial intelligence a little too much. Leave the creating to the one above. Dealing with a computer, a smart phone, a smart television, and all the other Smart gadgets is enough. Do not mess around with something that can cause possible immeasurable harm to our society.
