What Kind of America Do You Want?

To the Editor:

The Constitution of the U.S. was signed 233 years ago on September 17, 1787. Calvin Coolidge said: “To live under the American Constitution is the greatest political privilege that was ever accorded to the human race.” This sentiment has been and should be repeated often.

Today principles of the Constitution are under attack. Our Founding Fathers knew that the cause of liberty did not require a majority of the people to prevail. Instead, they believed that the key to advancing liberty in America was a dedicated minority that worked tirelessly to educate their fellow citizens.

Freedom of thought, tolerance, and inclusion have been replaced in the classrooms of America by social conditioning, disdain for, and suppression of opposing views. History is being reinterpreted “to fit a new political and social mantra.” The 1619 Project is an assault on the American republic and “destructive to understanding the roots and progress of America.” This assault on history is being promoted for the purpose of overturning America’s constitutional system.

The Constitution is the very foundation of the system of law and order many immigrants seek in their struggles to reach America. Destroying this foundation destroys the country built upon it.

The framers of the American constitution were students of history with a moral compass. “Our nation’s heritage is one of revolution, risk, and redemption.” Where is America’s moral compass displayed today? Certainly not by athletes who do not show proper respect for ‘Old Glory,’ America’s symbol of freedom; or, rioters and looters who show no respect for property or privacy. The person observed stealing flags from property owners along FM 609 between La Grange and Flatonia displayed a lack of moral compass.

There is no justice in lawlessness. The principles of freedom of thought, tolerance, and inclusion must not be replaced with the baseless, tragic set of ideas violent emotional protesters rant about. These protesters have no moral compass. A free and independent society cannot survive identity politics or political correctness. These ideas support lawlessness, intimidation, and division. Is there anything more divisive than choosing a running mate based on gender and skin color? What is more divisive than killing legislation that would benefit public safety for the express purpose of promoting a politicized agenda? Or, requiring two anthems must be played before a football game?

Our Republic will not survive if we’re going to act on hate and teach young people that our country should hate itself. There is a slate of candidates running for the State Board of Education on the November ballot whose ideology aligns with the 1619 project. Beware of being deceived or intimidated by propaganda promoting a regime change that is antithetical to the very principles and purposes of the American ideal. Our Republic needs fighters for liberty, not career politicians or ‘woke’ charlatans who pretend to serve “in your best interest” while “reimagining” American values and freedoms.
