On July 1, monthly Medicare premiums had increased from $6.70 to $7.20 per month. The Medicare law required an annual review of the program to estimate the cost of coverage for the following year. The law also limited basic premium rate increases to the percentage that Social Security benefits rose. In 1975, Social Security benefits climbed 8%.

The La Grange Independent School District’s 1976-77 approved budget of $1,453,162 was only fractionally higher than the prior year’s total of $1,442,194. The allocation of funds was: instruction service, $870,724; educationally disadvantaged, $19,258; instructional-related service, $106,378; pupil services, $110,245; administration, $136,135; plant maintenance and operation, $153,106; and federal money, $57,315. To keep the budget in line with 1975 and allow for increases in salaries, teaching supplies, gasoline, insurance and utilities, several cuts were made. Two buses costing $23,000 the prior year were no longer needed, maintenance labor was trimmed by $30,000, and fewer air conditioners would be ordered to save an additional $20,000.
