Team Up For Mail-in Vote

To the Editor:

I was so pleased to see the letter last week from Fayette County Republican Chairwoman Deborah Frank. She is certainly correct, the people who staffed the voting locations in the July 14 Democratic Party primary runoff deserve thanks and recognition. All Poll Workers Matter.

Since Chairwoman Frank has raised this issue, I assume that she will join Democrats in advocating mail-in balloting for the upcoming Nov. 3 General Election and, perhaps, all future elections. Mail-in balloting would prevent Republicans and Democrats alike from having to make the sacrifice of staffing so many polling locations. Mail-in ballots would also prevent voters and election workers from risking their personal health and safety to cast or collect votes. Finally, mail-in ballots would be vastly less expensive for the hard-working American taxpayer. The greatest expense in any election is the compensation for the many workers required to pull it off. Fayette County alone requires more than 110 Election Day workers. Each of those workers works about 13 hours at $8 per hour. That alone is more than $11,000 for Fayette County only.

Chairwoman Frank, like me, has been intimately involved in conducting elections in Fayette County. I think she is well aware that President Trump’s claims that mail-in ballots opens the door to fraud is totally absurd. Given her experience and her acknowledgement of the difficulty in finding Election Day workers, I am confident she will join Democrats in calling for mail-in balloting. Anything else would be hypocritical.
