Strong Emotions and Civility
To the Editor:
Thank you, Mr. Romberg, for your words of wisdom in your letter “About Civility” in the 10/8/21 FCR. I agree that we need to show respect for others’ opinions. Too many of us don’t allow other people to have an opinion if it is different from ours; often rudely putting down those opinions. Remember, talking poorly about someone else’s music doesn’t make your’s sound any better.
One of my favorite movies said that America is advanced citizenship. You want free speech? Let’s see you acknowledge a person whose words make your blood boil, advocating that which you would spend a lifetime opposing. That doesn’t mean that you have to agree with them. Just respect that they have the right to express their opinion. Hopefully, they will reciprocate.
Politics is a serious business dealing with serious issues and evokes seriously strong emotions. It may not build character, but politics can reveal one’s character. Let’s remember to treat other people the way that you want to be treated.
