State is Partially At-Fault

To the Editor:

We all can say the flooding and loss of life at Camp Mystic was a tragedy and the story about the running of Camp Mystic and licensing of the camp are daily news.

However, the State of Texas only is looking at the operators of that camp and their failures that led to this tragic event. The state should also be looking at their own failures with this camp and others. The state was so quick to expect payment for the issuing operator licenses. They neglected to further demand that the camps be run safely. But did they or just take the money and run? The state is the one with all the historical records, not the camp operators. Did the state pass onto the operators the past flooding in the area that could be catastrophic? No they did not.

While all involved with the licensing and running of the camps are truly responsible for the outcome of the July 4th flooding. But, instead of just pointing out the misdeeds of the operators they should be looking at themselves as well. We get our driving license from the DMV and pay to get that license, but that is not the end, but just the beginning. There is a police force which looks out for poor drivers and takes them to task. So where was the State of Texas with regards to these camps after issuing licenses?
