Sense of Decency

To the editor:

There is an old joke about a woman catching her husband in bed with another woman. She looks at him and says, “How could you?” He jumps up and says, “Now just wait a minute. Are you going to believe your lying eyes, or are you going to believe what I tell you?”

We are increasingly being asked that question. We see video of a man being pushed to the ground, his legal firearm being taken away, and then—once he could in no way be considered a threat—shot more than ten times. I’ll paraphrase here, but the administration is saying, “Are you going to believe your lying eyes, or are you going to believe what I tell you?”

Most people, if they hadn’t already locked into an opinion, would look at that video and know this man’s rights were violated and that he was unjustly killed. However, if you have already locked into a position that ICE is good and that they have the right to do whatever is necessary to remove illegal immigrants, you might still find a way to twist this in your mind. That is not only the point; it is also the plan.

On January 28, FBI agents executed a high-profile search warrant at the Fulton County, Georgia, Election Hub and Operations Center to re-examine and challenge the 2020 election that he lost. There is absolutely no new evidence. The Trump campaign and its allies filed multiple legal challenges in Georgia contesting aspects of how the vote was conducted, and all of those lawsuits were either dismissed by judges or voluntarily dropped by the campaign.

So why is Trump challenging this again now? The upcoming midterm elections look to be a bloodbath for Republicans as people wake up to our loss of democracy and the fact that the checks and balances of our government are being removed. The administration needs a pretense to intimidate voters to keep this from happening.

So, to all who are still supporting violations of civil rights, human rights, and constitutional protections, I have one question: “Have you no sense of decency, sir?At long last, have you left no sense of decency?”
