Seems to Me We Live in Democratic Republic
To the Editor:
Ms. Frank’s letter published in the Sept. 18 FCR states that we live in a Constitutional Republic. I searched the internet for a definition of what that means and found this. A Constitutional Republic is a form of government in which the chief executive and representatives are democratically elected by the people and the rules of the government are set down in a written constitution. Our founding fathers were wise to incorporate the Constitution in our form of government to allow us the freedom to vote and still give protection to individuals from the majority. The Constitution is also designed so that it can be changed as necessary. Along the way, it has been changed 27 times, always with some in favor of the changes and some against.
Article 1 says that the House of Representatives shall be chosen by the people. The 15th Amendment gives Black men the right to vote. The 19th Amendment gives women the right to vote. The 24th Amendment gives us the right to vote without having to pay. The 26th Amendment gives everyone 18 years or older the right to vote. Having read the Constitution, with all of its voting guarantees it seems to me that we can also say that we live in a democratic republic.
Everyone please make sure you are registered and exercise your right to vote.
