Safer Schools The Answer

To The Editor:

As soon as the shooting occurred in Uvalde there was an outcry for politicians to do something, but what?

The first words to be spoken have always been to control the guns in the hands of the mentally unstable or anyone for that matter. Ban the AR-15’s or AK-47’s has become a rallying cry to control the shootings, but will this really stop the needless violence? No.

We can debate the issues that lead to legislation that would take guns out of law-abiding individuals and not really stop the violence towards school children. Red flag legislation is talked about, but how do family members agree to what degree is a person considered a danger? Will a family member really out another family member at the risk of a rift in the family?

One and only one way to protect our children in schools is to keep the crazies away from our children in the first place. We have gun laws and they have been proven not to work. Can anyone look at someone and know that they are crazy enough to warrant a red flag? Only allowing people with credible reasons to have access to the inside of schools is in effect in many schools with proven results. All doors with access to the outside can be monitored easily from the office of a school in the event one is left ajar. Preventing just anyone access to the inside of a school would go a long way in preventing events like those that unfolded in Uvalde. We can provide a safer environment for our children without making them feel as if they are in a penitentiary.
