Rural Renaissance

To the Editor:

Let’s face it. Most Americans live in urban areas by choice, whether for higher pay, advanced hospitals or hipper entertainment. But there’s a slice who would live in rural Texas if they could. It’s looking more and more like after the pandemic, they really could.

Tech titans like Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Amazon and Twitter all say that after the experience of the past two months, working from home will become the new normal.

Even if physical presence in a physical office is required a few days a month, it will be possible to have a great job while actually living anyplace you like.

Fayette County can’t compete with Austin’s Rainey Street with the hip crowd, but for those who long for the hometown life of their childhood, it will be possible.

Of course, this makes internet connectivity even more important. Fiber optic cable can’t come too quickly or reach too far.
