Republicans Saved The Day

To the editor:

I want to clarify information printed in an article which appeared in the FCR’s July 21, 2020 edition, page B1, titled “Voting Amidst Coronavirus…”. The article, in part, concerned the July 14 Primary Run-Off elections in Fayette County. First, I want to note that there were no run-off elections in Fayette County for Republican candidates. Therefore, only the Democratic party had a need to vote in those elections. In theory, this meant that the 12 polling locations open on election day would be worked by Democratic voters.

The article stated: “One Democratic polling place even needed to call in a Republican to help work on election day.” In fact, our Elections Administrator, Terri Hefner, had a fairly difficult time getting Democrats to work their own polls. Because of this, Republicans were scheduled and worked four of the polling locations.

These included Schulenburg, La Grange 1E, La Grange 1W and Plum. The first three are among the most populated polling districts in Fayette County. Without assistance from Republicans, the Democrat voters in these poll locations would have been disenfranchised. Republicans saved the day for them. Unfortunately, these efforts by Republicans were not acknowledged in the article or by the Democratic Party Chairman.
