The Fayette County Fair parade scheduled for 3 p.m. on Sat., Sept. 5, already had accepted 77 entries. Coming from out-of-town were: the Fourth Army band and color guard from San Antonio; Camp Gary drill team from San Marcos; Arabia Temple drum and bugle corps, precision motorcycle riders and cars; and Arabian Knights on horseback of Austin. Chambers of Commerce floats were coming from Luling, Columbus, Cuero, McDade, Yorktown, Ellinger, Washington County, Taylor, Moulton, Hallettsville, Bastrop, Smithville, Schulenburg, Lockhart, Bellville, Yoakum, Giddings and, of course, La Grange. The bands from La Grange High School, Junior High School and Bishop Forest High School also were entered.
Sacred Heart Catholic School opened for the new term with 143 students. The enrollment was down from the previous year due principally to several families moving out of the parish. Enrollment by room and instructor were: first grade, Sister Elaine, 14; second grade, Sister Valerie, 27; third and fourth grades, Mrs. John L. Sulak and Mrs. Adolph Matocha Jr., 33; fifth and sixth grades, Sister Gertrude, 34; and seventh and eighth grades, Superior Sister Amata, 35. Mrs. Edmund Svrcek and Mrs. Alfred Michalsky were working in the cafeteria.
Somewhere between 2,500 and 3,000 people filed through the brand spanking new Hermes Cartwheel Lodge for senior citizens during an open house on Sunday afternoon.
The La Grange Leopards turned from cold to hot, much to the pleasure of their coaches, when they locked horns with the Del Valle Cardinals in the first of two 1970 scrimmages. The Leopard coaching staff was particularly pleased with the ball carrying efforts of John Mode, Jimmy Quinn and Paul Risper, the tackle blocking of James Liska and Richard Grobe and the linebacking of Brian Prause. The Leps also intersected two passes, one by Wayne Voss and the other by David Zatopek.
Mrs. Charles L. Bybee and trustees of the Texas Pioneer Arts Foundation announced that Henkel Square at Round Top would officially open on September 7. It was to feature stores, homes and furniture crafted by German settlers of the area during the early and mid-19th century.
The Kerrville Bus Depot, formerly located at Highway Restaurant, moved across W. Travis St. to the east side of the Synder Motor Company building.
A truck would be making the rounds on Thursday morning to pick up potted plants for exhibit at the Fayette County Fair. Those interested were asked to call Mrs. Verna Reichert or Mrs. Elvira Saxon.
Funeral services were held for: Edward Henry Bowman, 66, a native of La Grange; Mrs. Elsie Guentert, 72, of Swiss Alp; Mrs. Frank J. Koenig, 83, a native of Ammannsville; Henry C. Brahm, 80, of Winchester; and Stanley Parma, 60, of Eagle Lake.
A $475,763 bid from Haworth Construction Co. of Houston for a 36-unit housing project was approved by the Schulenburg Housing Authority. The offer then was forwarded to the state agency in Fort Worth for final approval.
Four members of the St. Frances of Rome KJZT Society of La Grange were awarded 50-year membership pins following the 8 o’clock Mass on Sunday morning at Sacred Heart Church. The Rev. Harry Mazurkiewicz spoke briefly to bless the pins, which were presented by supreme president Mrs. Benita Pavlu of Austin to Mrs. Rita Kallus, Miss Anna Kallus, Mrs. Albina Korenek and Mrs. Mary Prilop. Local president Mrs. E.S. Kovar assisted in the presentation and was in charge of the arrangements. Following church services, breakfast was served in Sacred Heart School cafeteria.
Judith E. Lehmann, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Lehmann of La Grange, was named to the Blinn College honor roll for the second semester of summer school with a 3.50 gradepoint ratio.
A reunion of the descendants of the late Peter and Marie Nemec of Granger was held in Columbus at Gaertner Camp. The hosts were Mr. and Mrs. Louis Lycka of Rt. 2, La Grange.
The Plum 4-H Club met on August 20 in the ag building. Presiding over the meeting was Diane Howard. Secretary Patty Fluitt read the minutes of the last meeting and treasurer Bill Roensch gave the financial report.
