The La Grange Recreational Association set June 1 as registration day at the pool. Individual annual memberships cost $4 or a lifetime membership was offered for $15. The price for a season ticket was $10, while daily admission was 40¢ for members 12 and under and 50¢ for adults. Coach Ben Bloomer was managing the pool that summer.
Sheriff T.J. Flournoy reported that DWI offenders were jailed on April 2, 6, 7, 9, 11, 15, 20, 21, 22 and 23. Those charged with disorderly conduct were taken to jail on April 7, 8, 19, 20 and 29. Drunks were arrested on April 12 and 23.
An all-time record number of 131 seniors were candidates for graduation from La Grange High School. That topped the previous high of 127 in 1969. Commencement exercises were scheduled for Thurs. night, May 30, in the school auditorium. Johnny Clark, the superintendent of the Goose Creek Consolidated School District and president-elect of the Texas State Teachers Association, was to deliver the address.
At a regularly scheduled meeting, Fayette County’s commissioners discussed a county dumping ground and voted to consult local city leaders about it. Commissioners also accepted a bid of $25 for a 1956 model pickup offered by Precinct 1.
La Grange High School students placed in the 25th annual Vocational Industrial ofAmerica State meet held at the new Tarrant County Convention Center in Fort Worth. Danny Janacek, placed first with a rebuilt cylinder head, while third-place ribbons went to Ricky Kuhn for an exhaust-header and Victor Anders for dry cleaning technical information drill. Winning fourth place ribbons were Elaine Gorka for a dental assistant skillspeed drill and Dennis Muras for a rebuilt starter.
Larry Gene Malota was selected as valedictorian of Fayetteville Rural High School with a projected average of 95.55. His twin sister, Sharon Malota, was named salutatorian with a projected average of 94.76. They were the children of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Malota.
At Round Top-Carmine High School, Nancy Aschenbeck, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Aschenbeck of Shelby, was the highest ranking senior student. The second highest was Cynthia Fuchs, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Howard F. Fuchs of Carmine.
Fayette County 4-Hers captured seven blue ribbons and other accolades in the District 10 Eliminations. Senior division blueribbonwinnerswere:Elaine Pietsch and Roxanne Giese for a conservation of natural resources team demonstration; Diana Schultze and Jeanette Reinhardt for a cooperative demonstration; Catherine Hajovsky for a home improvement demonstration; and Elaine Warhol in the public speaking contest. In the junior division, Diane Vyvjala was first in the conservation of natural resources individual demonstration.
At the May meeting, the Colorado Valley 4-H Gauchos decided to again hold several play days and trail rides during the summer. Although holding an open house was discussed, it was agreed that more funds would be needed to take on such a project. After the business meeting, club members engaged in a riding session of western pleasure and halter classes.
The La Grange Garden Club finalized plans for the Faison Home’s 10th anniversary open house to be held May 5 and 6 from 1 to 6 p.m. All garden club members were assigned their duties by the chairs of the various committees. A country store was being held in conjunction with the open house and there would be no admission fee for the event.
Helen Frerichs, the brideelect of Philip Oestreich, was honored at a tea at the St. Paul Lutheran Church Fellowship hall on Sun., April 29, and introduced to the St. Paul Lutheran Church Women’s Circles. In the receiving line were: Mrs. Edgar Mayer, general chairman of the church women; the honoree and her mother, Mrs. Edgar Frerichs; and the groom’s mother, Mrs. Clarence Oestreich. The hostesses of the St. Paul Lutheran Church Women presented the bride-to-be with a platter in her chosen china pattern.
The La Grange Jaycee Demons dropped its opener the prior weekend to Schulenburg Lone Star, 3-2. The winning run came on Ronnie White’s solo homer. The count was 1-1 with one of Steve Janda’s offerings to propel it over the center field wall for the telltale counter and break a 2-2 deadlock. Meanwhile, Janda and Pete Stavinoha hurled toe to toe with each permitting only four safeties over the distance. Stavinoha whiffed 10 and gave up only one base on balls. Janda struck out five and free-passed two. Schulenburg got its pair with only one base knock, a double by Leo Hollas. Richard Hollas had gotten on base via the Demon second baseman’s muff and Mike Mazoch was safe when the pitcher threw wide after fielding his bunt.
For many years, The Fayette County Record had run a pictorial feature of youngsters in the area entitled “Citizens of Tomorrow.” That tradition was continuing with no strings attached. The photos of all the children whose parents or guardians brought them to the American Legion Hall in La Grange to be photographed on Sat., May 18 or Sun., May 19, would be included. Appointments could be made by contacting Mrs. Kent Hanna.
La Grange Mayor Pro-tem and U.S. postal clerk E.A. (Moe) Moellenberndt underwent a coronary bypass operation at St. Luke’s Hospital in Houston. The following day, he was doing as well as could be expected.
The Giddings Buffs took possession of the top spot in the Community Baseball League with a 7-8 victory over the Plum Ravens on Sunday. The winning pitcher was Clarence Hamff. The Warda Aces won their second game of the season by edging Ledbetter, 6-2, with David Schramm on the hill for the Aces. Ronnie Kaiser slammed a round tripper in the top of the fourth with one on. The loss was charged to Mark Krugler.
Mr. and Mrs. Otto Legler celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary with their children and grandchildren. Clara Brunner and Otto Legler were married on April 26, 1917.
