Granville, chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Texaco, Inc., one of the largest U.S-based oil companies, received the Distinguished Achievement Award from the University of Texas Ex-Students Association of New York. Granville graduated from UT in 1937 with a BS degree in Chemical Engineering. He earned a Master’s degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1939 before joining Texaco the same year as a student engineer. Texaco was headquartered in New York. A Fayette County sheriff’s officer making a routine call at the county jail on Saturday morning noticed a wad of paper clumsily covering a large padlock on one of the jail cell doors. Further examination showed this and three other large jail padlocks had been broken and similarly camouflaged. A seven-foot piece of 3x2 channel iron serving as a ceiling support had been broken off to break the locks. Also broken off was a leg from a table and part of a step leading to the upper story. “They (the three prisoners incarcerated in the jail) would surely have broken out if we hadn’t discovered their shenanigans,” said Fayette County Sheriff T.J. Flournoy. The sheriff lamented that he had been trying to get the three to trial, but hadn’t had any luck yet.
With the help of government funds, the Carmine Fire Department obtained a 2,800-gallon water tank truck that could be filled in 10 to 12 minutes from any city fire plug. The department’s other units were two 1946 models and a 1971 pumper- booster.
On the last day for filing, two local contests developed. Joe G. Bargas, a farmer from the Holman community, filed 10 minutes before the 4 p.m. deadline to oppose incumbent Rudolph Voss for Place 7 on the La Grange School Board. Another last-minute filer, Raymond Zingelmann, was running against George H. Giesber, who was bidding for re-election to the La Grange City Council – Ward 1. Milton von Minden filed earlier in the week for mayor, opposing L.W. Stolz Jr., who was seeking his third term. A former mayor, von Minden had held that post for 18 years, as well as serving an additional four years as a city council person. Lloyd Kolbe filed earlier for Place 6, the uncontested school board position on the ballot. It was formerly held for more than 30 years by Dr. L.D. Boelsche who did not seek re-election.
Fifteen-year-old Debbie Kolak, the daughter of Highway Patrolman and Mrs. A.F. Hall of La Grange, underwent a long-awaited kidney transplant at Austin’s Brackenridge Hospital. Following surgery, she was listed in good condition.
The 37 Fayette County 4-H Club members, who took part in the 41st annual Houston Livestock Show, brought home nearly $2,500 in exhibit sales, premiums and scramble certificates. The top sale was $400 for the 16th place pen of broilers exhibited by Diane Ernstes of the Swiss Alp club. Charles Bippert of the La Grange club sold his 8th place turkey tom for $350. John Fietsam Jr. and Dennis Kristynik of the Bishop Forest club each received $225 certificates for a dairy animal to show next year in Houston.
Lee Mueller, the president of the La Grange Industrial Foundation, presented detailed plans for a new venture to directors of the La Grange Area Chamber of Commerce. He outlined the foundation’s goals to organize as a non-profit and raise funds to purchase industrial sites and buildings. The matter was referred to a committee.
A fund to help young Rudy Malek, who had been seriously injured in a pick-up accident, was underway in Fayetteville. Collection jars had been placed all over town or donations could be mailed to Fayetteville Bank. Although he was back home, Rudy’s condition was still described as serious. Mrs. Joe D. Sladek was in charge of the fund.
Funeral services were held for: Arno E. Arndt, 75, of Fayetteville; Mrs. Elvia Schaefer, 65, of Black Jack; Alvin Sulik, 63, a native of Fayette County; Louie H. Behrens, 39, of La Grange; and Henry Marek, 81, of Fayetteville.
Three Vocational Office Education students from La Grange High School went to Bryan to compete in the Area III Youth Leadership Conference sponsored by the Office Education Association. Jeanette Clegg placed fourth in accounting and related, level 1 and Melanie Brown came in first place in stenographic occupations, level 2. Katherine Urban competed in the typing and related, level 2 category. Chapter Advisor Mrs. Eleanor Goen, who accompanied the girls to Bryan, planned to take Jeanette and Melanie to the state leadership conference in San Antonio at the end of March.
La Grange High School girl volleyballers rebounded from two setbacks at the hands of Edna to defeat the Columbus Cardinals in a twin bill. The junior varsity lassies conquered their foes, 15-1, and 15-4. High pointer was Susan Prause with 14, followed by Brenda Read with 7, Margie Kovar with 4, Sandra Koether and Catherine Munsch with 2 each and Denise Roberts with 1.
Three La Grange Leopards placed on the all-District 13-3A west zone mythical basketball teams. Robert Poole was given a berth on the number one unit, while Harold Lindemann and Jim Quinn were picked for the number two.
Three La Grange ladies were on a three-week tour of Europe, headquartering in Zurich, Switzerland. Mrs. Atlan (Verlene) Citzler, Mrs. Rudolph (Alleyn) Voss and Mrs. Lloyd (Joyce) Kolbe left Houston’s international airport on a KLM Royal Dutch Airlines 757 Superjet. They had stopovers in Montreal, Canada, and Amsterdam, Holland, before arriving at their destination in Switzerland where they met their tour guide, Mrs. Citzler’s daughter, Annette.
Mrs. F.S. Baumbuch received a perpetual enrollment in the Clerical Endowment Fund of the Diocese of Austin, a gift from the four local ladies’organizations in Sacred Heart Parish: the Sacred Heart Parent-Teacher Association, Ladies Altar Society, Annunciation Court of the Catholic Daughters of America and KJZT.
