REMEMBER WHEN?

Another fictitious telephone request for emergency service was received on Sunday by the La Grange Fire Department. The caller reported that a twocar accident had occurred on FM 609 and both cars were on fire. The department’s booster truck, along with an ambulance and highway patrol car rushed to the area but, again, nothing was found. The caller reportedly gave his name, but officers say it was fictitious. Sheriff T.J. Flournoy said his investigation was ongoing and vowed if arrests were made, “We are going to prosecute to the fullest extent of the law.”

At the quarterly meeting of Fayette County chambers of commerce and city and county officials, Fayette County Judge David M. Murray addressed the concept of a county airport. Judge Murray said officials with the Texas Aeronautics Commission had talked the county out of a ‘super airport.’ He added, “I’ve been convinced that such an airport would not be used.” He recommended the county give 100% participation and contribute financially to airport projects with different cities in the county taking the lead. The judge proposed two airports: one serving La Grange and the other the Schulenburg-Flatonia area. J.C. Warhol, the president of the La Grange Chamber of Commerce, presided over the session. Large contingents from Ellinger, Round Top, Schulenburg and Flatonia were among the 60 persons in attendance.

Fayette County and La Grange officials finalized contracts with the Capital Area Planning Council (CAPCO) to implement a regional law enforcement radio system, a muchneeded service. Previously, there was no coordinated communications network among law enforcement agencies across the state. Therefore, city police departments were often unable to radio neighboring law enforcement agencies. The Fayette County Sheriff’s Department was to receive $24,200 worth of installed equipment, although the county would actually pay only $3,025. The City of La Grange was to pay $1,167 for $9,332 worth of installed equipment.

La Grange High School Senior Jim Quinn, an all-district pick at fullback and linebacker, signed with A&I University at Kingsville. Jim, a 6-1, 190-pound prospect, had been on an all-district team member since he was a sophomore. He also won honors in basketball, track and baseball. In addition to athletics, Jim served as Fayette County 4-H president, was a class officer and received an American Legion award. Jim’s parents were Mr. and Mrs. John Quinn of La Grange.

For the first 52 days of 1973, La Grange had recorded 8.02 inches of rain, an average of .15 of an inch per day.

Funeral services were held for: Mrs. Lee (Leonie) Wagner, 66, of Winedale; John Schuster, 84, of Nechanitz; Robin J. Rauch, 61, of Walhalla; Mrs. Willie (Marcella) Tumis, 78, of Ammannsville; and Mrs. Blondina Haschke, 78, of Wincheste.

Bluebonnets and other spring flowers were expected to bloom in profusion due to ample rainball.

La Grange junior varsity and varsity volleyball teams brought back two victories each when they travelled to Wharton. The junior varsity starting lineup was: Jeanette Gause, Sandra Koether, Denise Roberts, Catherine Munsch, Susan Prause and Brenda Read. Spikers for both games with identical scores of 15-6 were Catherine Munsch and Jeanette Gause. Jeanette Gause was the high pointer with 9. Players on the varsity, which played stupendously, were: Elaine Matocha, Wilma Scott, Donna Wessels, Carol Kana, Barbara Liska and Debbie Roberts. Cindy Hajek substituted for Carol Kana toward the end of the second game. The final scores were 15-2 and 15-1. Spikers in both games were: Donna Wessels, Wilma Scott, Carol Kana, Elaine Matocha, Debbie Roberts and Cindy Hajek. High pointer for both games was Elaine Matocha with 14.

Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Fleck observed their 60th wedding anniversary at Sun., Feb. 10 at the West Point Community Center.

The third time charm for the Round Top-Carmine Cubettes was not to be. After climbing the girls’ basketball ladder to the very top for the third year in a row, they lost to the Poolville team from North Texas, but not without a magnificent fight.

Thirty-seven Fayette County 4-H members were participating in the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Feb. 23-March 4. Exhibiting animals in the dairy scramble division were: Clarence Hartensteiner, David Cernosek and Daniel Cernoch, who would also compete in the junior dairy show with Sharon Dopslauf, Elizabeth Janda and Stanley Pesek. John Fietsam Jr. was exhibiting a fat lamb and Dennis Wagner was entered in the breeding sheep division. Kelly Smith was showing two barrows in the junior barrow show.
