Wilbert A. Jaster, the chair of the La Grange Chamber of Commerce Christmas decorating program, presented Douglas Lehmann, the treasurer of the Holy Cross Youth League at Warda, with a check for $243.11. The youths earned the money by potting and delivering 110 wellshaped trees to cooperating merchants in downtown La Grange and along both highways.
Fayette County Commissioners Court adopted the following rates for foster home care: 0-6 years, $50 per month; 6 to 12 years, $60 per month; 12 years and up, $70 per month; handicapped, $95 per month; clothing, $10 per month, Medicaid coverage, $4.60 per month with other medical and dental expenses to be allowed depending on case needs; boys’ haircuts, 6 years and up, $2 per month; and child’s allowance, age 12 and up, $1 per month.
La Grange’s Leopard cagers again outscored their adversary in the second half at Giddings, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the lead the home-court Buffaloes had piled up. The Leps came out on the short end of the ballgame, 57-51. Johnny Dawson led Lep scorers with a dozen, followed by Charles Williams and Billy Miler with 10 points apiece. Gary Minzenmeyer had eight and David Elmore scored seven points.
Lloyd Henderson, a former La Grange Leopard football performer, was home for the holidays following quite an illustrious season with Highlands College in New Mexico.
John Mode of La Grange was selected as one of 20 competitive nominees for two places in the next freshman class at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, New York. The son of Dr. and Mrs. W.G. Mode of La Grange, John was a three-year letterman on the Leopard football team and had been active in a number of extracurricular activities at La Grange
High School.
Funeral services were held for: Robert Lange, 68, a Brenham civic leader; August C. Schultz, 86, formerly of Ledbetter-Waldeck; and Ernest Simpson (Buddy) Young, 56, of West Point.
On Saturday and Sunday, December 19 and 20, Midway Drivein Theatre in Schulenburg was showing “The Italian Job” that starred Michael Caine and Noel Coward.
The student body elected Lawrence Hrachovy and Nancy Vasut as Mister and Miss Fayetteville Rural High School. Noreen Jaster and Calvin Coufal were named runners-up.
Approximately 650 Hermes Elementary School students received their annual Christmas treat from their teachers on Friday morning. They were bussed to the Cozy Theatre where they saw “Nature’s Half Acre” and “Wonders of the Everglades,” plus a cartoon entitled “Three Little Pigs.”
M/Sgt. August Canik and Mrs. Canik and their children of Crest View, Florida, were spending several weeks with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. August Canik Sr. and Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie Svrcek. At the end of his leave, the Caniks were to report to Westover Air Base in Massachusetts.
After spending a year and a half in Vietnam, Robert Vitek, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Vitek of Fayetteville, received his discharge from the U.S. Air Force.
A team of archeologists had begun work in a pasture north of Shelby in an attempt to solve some of the mystery surrounding a 110-year-old house that had been moved to The University of Texas Winedale Inn property near Round Top the previous year. The three-man team was aiding in the restoration of the Greek Revival home built in 1859 by Dr. Gregor McGregor for his bride, Annie Portia Fordtran, and given to Winedale by Miss Ima Hogg of Houston. Miss Hogg had purchased the house from Mrs. A.G. Nienast and Mrs. Adolph Wehmeyer of Brenham. Winedale curator Lonn Taylor said the archeologists hoped to discover the original construction of a rear chimney that had been torn down when the kitchen fireplace was replaced with a stove. They were also trying to determine the exact construction of a rear porch, which had evidently been altered after the house was built.
A covered dish meal along with baked turkey was served by the VFW Auxiliary’s Christmas party. A total of 130 continuous membership service pin awards were announced at the event that included 58 with 25 years of membership, nine with 20 years, 17 with 15 years, 21 with 10 years and 25 with five years.
The children of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hackemack Sr. invited friends and relatives to an open house in honor of their parents’ 60th wedding anniversary on Friday, Dec. 25 from 2-4 p.m. at the Burton Community Center.
Richard Legler, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lee O. Legler and grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Otto Legler and Mr. and Mrs. H.A. Engbrock of La Grange, received his Bachelor of Arts degree in the College of Science at Texas A&M University. Following the morning ceremonies, he was awarded his commission into the U.S. Army Reserves in the afternoon.
A critical discussion of the athletic program’s finances took place at La Grange school trustees’ meeting on Tuesday night. The athletic department account showed income of $12,229.25 and a deficit of $1,140.99. The board approved Superintendent C.A. Lemmons’ request to borrow money to pay the athletic department expenses.
