U.S. Rep. J.J. “Jake” Pickle told several hundred people at Ledbetter’s annual homecoming that the Congress of the United States was going to have to do something quick for the American farmer or he would be squeezed out of existence. Pickle pointed out that in 1950 the farmers’ profit margin was 7% to 10%. In 1970, he estimated it had fallen to 3%. In addition to what Pickle described as ‘razor-thin profits,’ he cited a study that said it cost 10 to 14 times as much for a farmer to go into business in 1970 as it had in 1950.
Both the Ravens and the Braves developed a minimum of base hits into explosive run totals to remain undefeated in Tri-County Teenage League competition. The Ravens conquered Yoakum, 10-5, getting nine base hits in the process as Charles Koether and Bubba Smith doled out five to their opponents. Tim Sulak led the offense for the victorious Ravens, getting an inside the park homerun and a single in four trips, while Larry Hatfield had a bases-loaded triple, and Smith and Zatopek each contributed a pair of singles.
Kevin M. Wilson of La Grange and Kenneth Jurecka from Fayetteville were chosen to receive a working stipend for driving the Blinn College bus during the 1970-71 school year. This provided the youths with free tuition, fees, books and noon meal in exchange for providing the transportation. Wilson’s route included La Grange and the Warda area, while Jurecka’s covered Fayetteville and Shelby.
La Grange’s Connie Macks Jackie Daniels evened their 1970 record at 1-1 when they took a 13-5 decision from Memorial Bay City. Sales Bubba Consultant Riehs opened on the hill for La Grange and left the mound with a 4-0 lead. Earl Gallip followed and Danny Glasier finished the game. www.heartoftexa
U.S. Representative J.J. “Jake” Pickle called a post office decision to eliminate Sunday mail delivery from Austin to approximately 20 Central Texas towns as false economy. Pickle said, “This sounds like the death knell for all weekend mail service to me.”
Funeral services were held for: A. Edgar Kucera, 75, a native of
Ellinger and Fred J. Kilmek, 62, of Fayetteville.
Mrs. Walter Stelzig was selected as an adult leader of the Swiss Alp 4-H Club.
Hermann Sons Lodge #8 was accepting freewill donations at its homemade ice cream social where sandwiches and cake also were to be served. The event was set for 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 20, on the corner of Crockett and Franklin Sts., across from the Presbyterian Church.
Connie Janda of La Grange received a two-year $500 scholarship to Blinn Junior College from the Wholesale Beer Distributors of Texas. She also won the Rose Meincke Academic Award for three years and the Homemaker of Tomorrow award from La Grange High School. Connie was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leo F. Janda of La Grange. Her father was employed by John Wesley Steinmann Beer Distributing Company that handled Lone Star and Shiner brands.
Lt. B.A. Krause of La Grange (979) 702-9209 was serving at the U.S. Naval Support Activity in the household effects jackie.hotmc@gmail.com office in Da Nang, Republic of Vietnam. That unit handled all unaccompanied baggage for all U.S. armed services and civilian personnel in the area of approximately 800,000 pounds per month. Lt. Krause, the son of Mrs. Meta S. La Grange High School graduates Patricia Holub and Mary Hofmayer, who were students at Brackenridge Hospital School of Nursing, were capped on May 31. Patricia was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry F. Holub of West Point and Mary was the daughter of Fred T. Hofmayer of Winchester.
Helen Frerichs, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Frerichs, and Janet Zimmermann, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elroy Zimmermann, were volunteering as candy stripers at Fayette Memorial Hospital.
School trustees voted to sell the house built on College Street by La Grange high school students. Approximately 2,000 square feet in size, it had a brick veneer front and cedar shake sides. Interior walls had been taped ready for painting. The school district had invested over $14,000 in the building.
The 18th Freudenberg-Kirchhofer reunion was held on Sunday, June 7 at the Sons of Hermann Hall in Prairie Valley with 96 family members present. Officers elected for two-year terms were: president - Clinton Harbers, La Grange; vice-president - Edwin Koopmann, La Grange; and secretary-treasurer, Mrs. Doris Skinner, Georgetown.
