Four disorderly conduct charges were filed in the justice court of Judge A.V. Smith following an incident that occurred in front of a package store in Flatonia. Three Alabamans, traveling en route to Arizona in a 1964 Plymouth, picked up four hitchhikers west of Houston and stopped in Flatonia. After an argument ensued inside the store, six of the group drove off, leaving the liquor purchaser stranded. The latter contacted Fayette County Deputy Sheriff August Brunner, who issued a stop order via short wave radio. The vehicle was flagged down in Luling. Brunner, accompanied by Constable Bud Robinson of Flatonia and Deputy Sheriff Jack DeLoney of Waelder, went to Luling and brought all seven to the Fayette County Jail. Four men paid $30 fines apiece for the disorderly conduct charges in the JP Court. The women were not charged. The group was then taken to Waelder for further questioning. The Rev. Adolph Brand re
ceived the key to the new parsonage at St. Michael’s Church in Winchester from Milton Koenning of the building committee. Other elders and building committee members present at the ceremony were: Marvin Wenke, Martin Zoch, Raymond Schulz, Melvin Fritsche, Willie Lehmann, Martin Unger, Martin Kilian, Martin Schulz, Edwin Unger and James Ephraim.
Cases before the new grand jury for the fall term of Fayette County District Court included: assault, burglary with intent to commit theft, theft, DWI-second offense, assault and attempted rape, forgery and defrauding with a worthless check. Clarence Friedrich of Schulenburg was the grand jury foreman.
People from five area towns turned out at the community center in Schulenburg for a square dancing group organizational meeting. Len Bachman, a caller from San Antonio, saw to it that everyone participated in learning to dance. A series of 10 lessons over as many weeks was planned.
Mrs. Preston Smith, the wife of the Texas governor, was being honored at a coffee in the reception room at La Grange City Hall. This was Mrs. Smith’s first visit to the area. Mrs. Martin Dies, the wife of the Texas Secretary of State, was accompanying her.
Funeral services were held for: Mrs. Aloise Baca, 84, of Rabbs Prairie; Mrs. Frances Zapalac, 84, of Fayetteville; Mrs. Anna Scott, 88, of Biegel; Fred G. Kossa, 57, of Dubina; and Mrs. Louise Heintschel, 91, of Fayetteville.
A membership recruitment drive to honor the Rev. Harry Mazurkiewicz, the chaplain of Chromcik Council, Knights of Columbus, was announced by Grand Knight Douglas Supak. E.H. Francke, who was named general chairman of the program, said the KCs were looking forward to increased activity in the area of social and civic responsibility in keeping with the ecumenical spirit of Vatican II.
After sparring with a stubborn Rockdale Tiger aggregation for more than three quarters, the La Grange Leopards flexed their muscles deep in the final period to come up with a hard-earned 7-0 football victory on Leopard Field. La Grange started its touchdown campaign about halfway through the last stanza when the Leopards took over on the Tiger 47. John Mode, Paul Risper and Bubba Riehs handled the ball-toting chores abetted by a five-yard assessment against the visitors for illegal motion.
The annual back-to-school night sponsored by the La Grange Parent-Teacher Association was set for Monday, Sept. 28 at 8 p.m. The event was to get underway with the serving of refreshments in the Hermes Cafeteria. The elementary school was hosting an open house from 6:30 to 7:30 with the main program in the auditorium at 7:30. It was to include music by the high school and junior high school bands, as well as participation by the Fräulein and the twirlers. The Rosa Meinecke Awards for the 1969-70 school year were to be presented. A film on rubella (German measles) was to be an introduction to the mass vaccination effort scheduled across the county on November 5-6.
David Havemann of West Point, who was in his second year at the University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio, received a $300 legislative scholarship. That medical school had graduated its first class of doctors in June 1970.
A group of Fayette County Democrats attended the state convention in Dallas where Charles H. Jungmichel of La Grange was reelected District 5 committeeman. Members of the delegation included: Mr. and Mrs. John F. Luecke of La Grange; Mrs. Shelton Wagner of Schulenburg; Robert Mica of Flatonia; and the Rev. Arlyn J. Hausmann of Swiss Alp.
The J.H. Okruhlik family held its first reunion in Praha at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Okruhlik. Each family brought a basket lunch for the noon meal. Elected as officers were: Bennie Okruhlik, chairman; Gabriel Gabler, vice chairman; Martha Cernosky, secretary; and Anna Stepanek, treasurer-reporter.
