1975: New Light Beer Makes Local Debut

Local distributor Roy Kuhn Co. of La Grange, represented one of 19 market areas in 10 states and the District of Columbia, was testing a new, onethird- less-calorie beer from Jos. Schlitz Brewing Co. of Milwaukee.
Fayette County’s commissioners formerly approved relocation of S.H. 159 in the Fayette Power Project area. The court also went on record to request that the Lower Colorado River Authority upgrade County Road 117 in Precinct 2, which ran from the original Hwy. 159 at Park to connect with the new highway. The court’s specifications called for the road to be 100 feet wide and hard-surfaced.
Brown & Root, Inc., the general construction contractor for the first phase of the Fayette Power Project, was already moving employees into the area, and officials of the Houston- based firm were preparing to provide more details about staffing later in the month.
Cindy Petras of La Grange, the daughter of Mrs. Ike J. Petras, was chosen Miss Buccaneer at Blinn College’s homecoming exercises in Brenham.
Congressman Jake Pickle announced the immediate past national commander of the American Legion would be the guest speaker at the annual Memorial Veterans’Day Service at Praha. James M. Wagonseller of Lancaster, Ohio, served as chief officer of the 2.7 millionmember American Legion during 1974-75. Wagonseller flew 50 combat missions in the European theater in World War II and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Usually, about 1,000 people attended the 11 a.m. Praha commemoration.
Only 35% of Fayette County’s eligible voters turned out for Tuesday’s election, but those who did go to the polls followed the trend of the rest of Texas to put the hex on changing the state’s constitution.
Fayette County Sheriff T.J. Flournoy reported October was a busy month. Once again, multiple people were jailed for DWI on the following days: 1, 6, 10, 11, 12, 13, 18, 19, 22, 24, 25 and 31. Other repetitive citations were written for disorderly conduct, writing hot checks and drunkenness. The sheriff’s office investigated shootings at Engle and Ellinger and thefts reported from Ledbetter, Cozy Corner, Halsted and La Grange.
The greediest trick-or-treaters in town would have been satisfied with the bag of goodies that Hallettsville handed La Grange at Leopard Field on Friday night. Eight times the bedeviled Brahmans gave up the football, and five turnovers inside their own 20 immediately led to Leopard touchdowns. The result was a 46-0 Halloween night romp by the defending District 25AA champs, who moved to within one game of at least a share of the 1975 title. The Leps’ domination of the Lavaca County visitors left no doubt about their high state ranking. Ben Vasut, Kenny Zimmerhanzel, Shelby Willett, Curtis Ray and Pat Smith were headliners in the all-star defensive cast. Vasut and Willett were involved in 17 tackles each, in which Zimmerhanzel had a key interception and Ray and Smith turned the center of Hallettsville’s line to rubble.
Twenty new members were added to the membership roll of Fayette Memorial Hospital Auxiliary at an open house held in La Grange State Bank’s community room. New members were expected to work at least two hours a week at the hospital. Shannon Edwards, the little granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Edwards, became the youngest life member. Mrs. Helen Harris and Mrs. Fritz Janssen, who had been active for some years, transferred to life membership.
Mr. and Mrs. Max Citzler of La Grange were honored with a celebration on their 60th wedding anniversary on Saturday, Nov. 1, at the Rutersville Hermann Sons Hall. Mr. and Mrs. Citzler were married on Nov. 3, 1915. Their children included Mrs. Walter Stahmer andAtlan Citzler Sr., both of La Grange, and the late Arthur Citzler of Rutersville. The couple had 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
The children of Mr. and Mrs. Otto Chernosky honored their parents on their 50th wedding anniversary on Saturday, Oct. 25, at the SPJST Hall in Nelsonville.
Mr. and Mrs. Joe Bednar of La Grange marked their 60th wedding anniversary on Sept. 28 with a Mass for their intention at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in La Grange. The Rev. Harry Mazurkiewicz officiated. A reception followed at their home.
An open house was held on Sunday, Oct. 26, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ted Janda of Hostyn, honoring Martin Muras on his 90th birthday. Mr. Muras, who was born Oct. 8, 1885, in Frenstat, Czechoslovakia, came to America in 1899. He still enjoyed good health and until March of 1975, had made his home in Hostyn. Hostesses were Mrs. Ted Janda of Hostyn, Mrs. Loretta Janda of Stafford and Mrs. Marcella Janda of La Grange.
Funeral services were held for Mrs. Ludwig (Cecilia) Mican, 67, a native of Holman, and Larry Lee Brunner.
Under the leadership of Carmine’s Otto L. Fuchs, Alvis Mueller and Floyd Etzel, boys from the Vocational Agricultural Department poured forms for a visitors’ dugout at the Cub baseball field.
