Redefining Marriage?
In a previous letter I quoted, “At some point we may start to acknowledge that both political parties are responsible in some measure for the challenges we face in our society. And at some point we might begin to address those challenges. But we won’t be able to do that if we cannot even agree on what words mean.”
Mr. Schumer has made it clear he is willing to dispose of the definition of marriage that has existed for thousands of years in many cultures. I can’t agree with him.
The Democrat leader of the U.S. Senate determined the first order of business for the reconvened U.S. Senate for a lameduck session was to take up a bill to redefine marriage.
Marriage does not need redefining.
Mr. Schumer and those who allied with him seem to lack knowledge of history. As in Hosea’s day these representatives are a people whose hearts have become calloused. “They hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes.”
Since the creation of man, marriage has been defined as man united with woman.
To accept the conjugal union of two men or two women as marriage defies the design of the creation of man and woman. The very name of the bill, ‘Respect for Marriage Act’ is deceitful. The bill demands respect for actions that are unnatural. Respect cannot be legislated.
This legislation repeals the Defense of Marriage Act.
Roger Severino, vice president of domestic policy at the Heritage Foundation has observed “Despite polling showing that their constituents oppose this legislation, they (senators) refused to adopt Utah Sen. Mike Lee’s amendment that would have protected the religious freedom of millions of Americans without taking away a single benefit or legal entitlement from same-sex couples,” So, what do we know about the new bill? “It won’t provide religious institutions with meaningful protections;” “the bill could certainly be used as a basis for the Internal Revenue Service to deny tax-exempt status to religious organizations that don’t toe the line on gay marriage;” “it could also be used to deny grants, licenses, or contracts.”
The only justification for this bill is the disruption of civilized society.
As in Hosea’s day, “they sow the wind and reap the whirlwind.”
