Recent Letter Was Hurtful

To The Editor:

I appreciate the balance that the Record brings to the “Letters to the Editor.” I try to read them all even if I don’t agree with the writer typically, or if the writer has a tendency to be longwinded. I can imagine it must be a challenge to decide which letters get printed and which ones do not.

With that being said, I strongly disagree with the decision to print Ms Ruth Fabian’s letter (Misleading not the Way to Show Respect) not because I disagree with it (I do) but because it purposely misgenders college swimmer and native Texan Lia Thomas three separate times. While I doubt Ms. Thomas reads The Record, I’m sure there are other trans and non-binary neighbors who do.

You may be asking, why does it matter? Misgendering someone has been associated with increased stigma and decreased mental health among trans and non-binary youth. If we, as a community, truly believe mental health matters (I think we do), why publish a letter that insists on denigrating another person?
