Read to Stay Informed

To the Editor:

Did the newspapers in New York fail the voters, or did the voters fail to read the local papers? It seems that when George Santos was elected on fraudulent credentials, the local (New York) newspaper failed the community. There are enough voters that feel deceived by Santos that if the election were held today, he would fail to be elected. Local newspapers should be the watchdog and protector of the public trust.

Every voter needs to read a local newspaper and the newspaper needs to provide non-biased information! And when needed, the editorial staff needs to dig deep into the background of the news.

I take two local papers and read every word of the editorial section as well as the major headline stories. But other local items can be just as importantsuch as local activities and gatherings.

I believe every high school student should be given a weekly test in civics/economics class based on some item from the local paper. My civics teacher did, and my paper was the Houston Chronicle (a lot to read). The internet does not cover things our voters need to know, but the internet can deliver the local news from Fayette County via a subscription to the local paper(s). I am proud that the Fayette County Record and the Schulenburg Sticker do their job.

Ask your fellow voters if they take the paper, and if not, WHY NOT?
