Q&A With Schulenburg Senior Esmeralda Aguirre

We caught up with Schulenburg senior Esmeralda Aguirre to ask her some questions about the wild end to her senior year:

Please discuss the typical senior year activities which have been canceled at your school this spring… banquets, prom and so forth.

A typical senior year during spring is busy and stressful for some of us. We anticipate the activities held during the spring since this is our last year of participating in one, being recognized for an achievement, an induction ceremony, band concerts, and basically making lasting memories with our friends and peers around us. Unfortunately, us seniors this year didn’t get to experience the full last year of high school. However, we did get to go to prom which was held earlier in the year which was great because at least we went to one last school event. Other than that, all banquets were cancelled, sports events, and the senior trip were cancelled.

Are there any plans for virtual activities?

So far our school has had virtual meetings for any student who has questions or concerns about anything. The sports banquet was online for those who are involved in sports getting recognized for their achievements.

What are your postgraduate plans: summer/college how have they been affected?

So far a few of my plans were cancelled for the summer that I had planned in the beginning of the year. It’s starting from zero all over again, replanning and trying to make summer the best out of it however possible. At the same time though, it wasn’t greatly affected that much, just a few things.

I will be attending Blinn College this fall in Schulenburg, none of my college plans have been affected so far.

What’s the worst thing about all this?

To me the worst thing about this was not being able to spend the rest of the school year with my friends and the cancellation of the school activities held in May. Basically a typical senior year that was cut so short, it would’ve been nice if we had a normal senior year.

What’s the best thing?

I got to mainly focus on filling out scholarships without having to stress out about also doing school work at the same time and not having to do finals. But the best out of this situation is the graduation ceremony not being cancelled.

How would you characterize the morale of your fellow seniors and yourself?

Even though the year was cut a bit short, we still made it and finished high school. Yeah it might have been completely different from what a normal senior experiences, but it didn’t stop us from graduating this year. The morale was positivity, hope, faith and confidence in maintaining our heads up for the bright future ahead of us. Nothing stopped us from going on with our dreams of applying for college, scholarships and furthering our education.
