Preventing Mass Shootings

To the Editor:

Frequent mass shootings will continue as long as demented individuals are able to obtain firearms. We have it fully in our power to prevent this and thereby to preserve countless innocent lives. Significantly reducing access by demented individuals to firearms can only be done through passage and effective enforcement of licensing laws and regulations prohibiting such access. Our society urgently needs to do this.

Laws and regulations can easily be created which do not in any significant way affect the acquisition, ownership and use of firearms by rational people in our society. The fear that firearm registration requirements might eventually lead to banishment of firearm ownership is completely unfounded. The overwhelming reason is that a very large majority of our citizens have always been and remain vigorously in favor of retaining the right of qualified members of society to acquire, own, and use firearms. Denying access to firearms by people not qualified to use them will not affect the millions of sane U.S. residents who are entitled to such access.

Passage of firearm licensing laws and regulations requires that a substantial majority of voters of all political persuasions recognize this urgent necessity. That in turn requires that a significant number of our citizens demand that their duly elected representatives – both state and national – work vigorously to put the needed laws and regulations in place, and to ensure that they are energetically enforced.

It is not enough for you to nod your head and agree. We have the power to reduce significantly the tragic loss of life that takes place in this country due to gun violence. But we will have to persuade our legislators to take action to obtain that result. We need to communicate with our legislators NOW demanding that they put in place the needed laws.

You can easily send via email a message like this; “Dear Senator/Representative John Doe: “I/we urge you to work vigorously to enact legislation that well effectively reduce mass school shootings by making it very difficult for irrational people to obtain and use firearms. Reasonable firearm licensing requirements will not impede in any way the ability of rational intelligent qualitied citizens to obtain licenses to acquire, hold, use, and enjoy firearms.
