Politicians Divide Us

To the Editor:

I think we are all wondering what the heck is going on in this country. In her weekly Fayette County Record column, Margo Johnson expressed her opinion that it’s all about hate, bigotry and racism and we should have a serious conversation about it. Margo, the debate is going on. Just go and watch CNN. You will be hard pressed to tell if the debates or the riots they are producing have the most hate and bigotry.

I don’t believe we have as much hate and racism as they tell us we do. My thoughts are that all this is a Democratic Party campaign. I think we have largely eliminated bigotry and racial hatred. We all shop together, pray together, marry each other and work together. Are there problems? Always will be, but as a civilized nation, we have a form of government that works those out.

That is contrary to what you hear politicians say. There is so much money and power for politicians to gain by dividing us. And when the country starts falling apart because of them, they are isolated from the harm they caused because they are in power. An example of that is the police brutality issue that seems to be fueling the current riots. Every one of those cities that are burning are run by Democrats and have been for the last 40 or 50 years. They are all wealthy black and white Democrats. They control the police. If you’re poor or don’t have a job, that is where you live because those politicians will subside your food and housing but give you no opportunity. Yet we have sent them so much money. but where has it gone?

They have police review boards and citizen oversight of the police department. The bad cop that killed the black man in Minnesota had 17 or 18 complaints from citizens about abuse of power. You hear nothing about them doing anything about it. Very strange that we are sitting here and being accused of bigotry and hatred while the very people that are in charge of policing it are the ones doing all the hollering.

We are not a nation of racists, the statistics will prove that. I do not blame the poor minority areas of the cities. They have been given money to survive on but no opportunity to prosper. You would think it would be time for a change of leadership? Oh, along came Donald Trump with jobs and opportunity, but we can’t have that. He might get reelected. We, as American citizens, can see what is going on and we knew we needed to change it at the ballot box but that made a lot of people very angry. Ms. Johnson really needs to tell me where all that hatred and bigotry is that we are accused of. I don’t see it. All I see is a bunch of corrupt politicians and activists provoking riots and protest from injustices that have already been addressed or that they should have been fixed. We can’t go to New York City or any of the major cities they control and fix anything so please don’t throw this racism stuff in our face here in La Grange.

All we can do is vote our representatives to go fix it and then hold them accountable if they don’t. This is where the minority communities need to step up. Don’t let them use you to get rich. You let them burn it down or radically change it and it won’t get better for you but only for the ones who gain power. Find your own Donald Trump who will clean up the mess your politicians have gotten you in.
