Please, Ask for Help
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
Across Fayette County, I have had the privilege of spending time with many of our seniors. Men and women whose lives have been marked by faith, generosity, and quiet acts of love. And I’ve noticed a pattern. Every single senior I meet has spent a lifetime helping others. You have fed neighbors in hard seasons, cared for family when no one else could, opened your homes, your wallets, and your hearts. Many of you have helped hundreds of people over the years, often without ever calling it “service”, you just called it the right thing to do.
But what I also see, time and again, is that when you need help, you hesitate to ask.
This letter is simply to say: PLEASE ASK Not because you are weak. Not because you are a burden. But because you deserve the same care, love, and support you spent your whole life giving to others.
Even Jesus Himself approached the inn hungry, tired, and in need of shelter. If the Son of God could ask for help, then surely the rest of us can, too. Asking is not a sign of failure, it is an act of honesty, humility, and trust. It allows others to serve God by serving you.
When we help our neighbors, we put the love we proclaim on Sundays into action Monday through Saturday. We get the chance to live out our faith in a tangible way. And I want you to know this clearly; when we help you, we do not see you in a negative light. We do not see weakness, or neediness, or burden.
We see honor. We see gratitude. We see someone who has walked many miles ahead of us and is giving us the chance to carry the load for a little while. Helping you isn’t something we “have to do”, it’s something we are grateful to do.
You spent your lives lifting others up. Now let us lift you. So please, if you find yourself struggling with transportation, food, housing, home repairs, medical appointments, loneliness, or anything else, reach out. Whether it’s a church, a neighbor, a community program, or those of us who work every day to serve seniors in Fayette County, someone stands ready to help.
Thank you for the way you have poured blessings into this community for decades. Now let us return those blessings to you, with joy and with love.
With deep respect and gratitude,
Kenny Couch Fayette County Habitat for Humanity
