Petty to Argue About Election Day Praise

To the Editor:

I think we can all agree that having and holding elections is the bedrock of our Republic. Additionally, I think that we can get a consensus agreement across party lines that it is our civic duty to assist in enabling the timely execution of these elections without regard to political affiliation/association. In Fayette County, there is a history of leaning across the aisle to ensure that these elections are staffed and go off without a hitch. This is just what neighbors do and regardless of what political ideology we may hold, we are all still neighbors.

As David McCall noted in his response to the FCRP’s chair, he showed his gratitude and appreciation for everyone who leaned in (especially during this time of uncertainty) and allowed the flawless execution of the Democratic Party’s primary runoff election. I can also say that prior to Ms. Frank’s LttE, he was already planning to express his appreciation for such. Speaking not just as a member of the FCDP, but as a citizen of Fayette County, I echo Mr. McCall’s appreciation and also extend a huge Thank You to all, Republican, Democratic, other, and unsure who helped in the execution of this election.

What confounds me is why this whole topic came to be to begin with. I think it begs the questions: What purpose does raising this topic serve? Does one’s civic duty end based on their political affiliation? Does one work elections for the pay, praise, or recognition for doing so?

While everyone’s experiences and drivers may differ, I can tell from my family’s experiences working elections that the hours of boredom can be taxing, the money isn’t great, there is usually no recognition, and we must expend PTO from our real jobs to participate. We were always thanked, have always felt appreciated, and felt we did our civic duty. With my approach and view, it seems quite petty (at best) and self-serving (at worst) that this topic was even raised especially in the manner it was. Now seems a good time to put the pettiness aside, accept the thanks and recognition which has been given, and get ready for November.
