Partisan Message Unethical
To the Editor:
An open letter to Charles Rettig, IRS Commissioner:
Dear Mr. Rettig,
I was pleased to receive a letter today from the Department of the Treasury, IRS division, notifying me that as part of the American Rescue Plan you had deposited to my bank account sufficient funds for me to buy meals for an entire day. I cannot tell you how relieved I am to receive such help in getting through the current devastating economic crisis. This assistance is obviously of great importance to your superiors, as the letter was issued from the White House and signed by President Biden, who was also careful to explain how the many other promises he has made to the American people are being implemented. It appears to me that Mr. Biden’s letter was blatantly political, and that using the IRS to convey such a partisan message may have been unethical. I would hope that the Democratic Party is reimbursing the Treasury Department for the cost of administering and distributing this political message.
