More Blue Districts
To the Editor:
Suddenly there seems to be an uproar over the possible redistricting in California. Texas Republicans including Governor Abbott have called it a political maneuver and accused Governor Newsom of a power grab. That’s an odd view since Texas is trying to take representation away from its own citizens. I am grateful that other states are willing to step up and try to stop the Trump takeover of Texas. The US President says that since he won Texas, he should get five more seats. He received 56% of the vote in Texas in 2024. Texas currently has 25 representatives to the US Congress that are Republican. That’s roughly 66% of our Texas delegation. If Trump wants to play a numbers game, I think the Republicans owe the Democrats four seats in Texas. That’s just not how it is done.
California and other states are responding to Abbott’s and Trump’s push to redistrict before the 2030 census. They are trying to keep the lines as they are now. I urge everyone to contact the governor’s office and get the redistricting taken off the agenda so that our state representatives can accomplish some meaningful work. Even if the redistricting plan has passed by the time this is printed, please contact your elected officials. This power grab is going to lead to further division in our state and country. There will be no one to blame for that except our governor and president.
