Manhunt in New Ulm

• An Austin County man is in custody after a two-day manhunt earlier this week in Austin and Colorado Counties. Jeremey Clayton, 35-years-old, was initially contacted by Austin County deputies in the early morning hours of Oct.12. Clayton was wanted for a felony parole violation by the State of Texas. According to authorities, Clayton fled in the vehicle and eluded capture. Over the next 24 hours, Austin County Sheriff’s deputies investigated numerous citizen sightings of Clayton in the Cat Spring – New Ulm areas of Austin County. Tuesday, Oct. 13 he was spotted walking in a field near the 19000 block of FM 1094. A search included Austin County Sheriff’s deputies, Sealy Police officers, DPS troopers, Bellville police, air surveillance and a police K-9 unit from the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department. Eventually, K-9 “Kolt” tracked Clayton to a swampy area of the woods where he was taken into custody. Clayton was booked into the Austin County Jail on the original parole violation felony as well as several new felony charges related to evading in a vehicle.
• After a rough patch with a former food distributor, the Margaret E. Blizzard Senior Activity Center will resume the USDA Farmers to Families Food Box Program on Oct. 14 and 28 after signing a new contract. The boxes are twice the size of the earlier produce boxes.
They will contain milk and dairy products, precooked chicken, lunch meat or hot dogs, and fresh fruit and vegetables. The senior center will be giving out more than 1,000 boxes and there is no age restriction or qualification residents musthave.

• A Lexington man armed with a knife was arrested on multiple charges after an encounter with police on Oct. 5 at 9:20 p.m. Lexington Police Officer Jarrod Jarmon requested assistance from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, needing additional units to back him up as a white male identified as 35-year-old Gary Johnson with a knife took off on foot at Avenue C and Shaw Street. Johnson was located and taken into custody to the Lee County Jail and booked for assault on a peace officer and possession of a controlled substance in a correctional facility.
