That Little Voice

Will someone tell me what day it is? I am asking that question more and more these days.

Why is it I don’t know whether it is Tuesday or Friday?

Last week every day felt like Saturday, and I couldn’t get my mind around the fact it was only Wednesday or Thursday. I was so delighted when Saturday did finally arrive and I could move on to Sunday.

I really don’t want to blame my confusion about days of the week on age or my mental stability, those are overused excuses. I need a fresh term for this quirky inattention, one that is positive and doesn’t reflect on my mental health or my aging bones.

Maybe it is ‘floral obsession’, since I am surrounded by blossoms of every kind here in San Miguel.

Or how about ‘busy entertaining’, which would indicate I have lots of friends and they are around a lot. Well, that wouldn’t really be the truth. Just the word “entertaining” implies I am adept at preparing hor’deovers and have perfect wines on hand all the time.

I do have a couple of off brand beers left over from my open house three years ago but serving expired beer probably wouldn’t be considered true ‘entertainment’. But wait, I do keep a supply of popcorn on hand, just in case someone drops by and is hungry.

I could even name it ‘political avoidance’. After all, one can get bogged down in who is blaming whom on what day of what year.

Maybe I don’t know what day it is because I seem to be doing nothing regularly. Sitting idly around day after day after day would get one confused as to whether it is time to wash clothes or iron them. But I have something like 34 tee-shirts and half that number of shorts, jeans, and pajamas so washing doesn’t happen often around here, and who has an iron these days?

A friend has programmed her phone to tell her what day it is every couple of hours, just in case she needs that information at any given time. I haven’t mastered that level of technological geekiness.

My doglets do let me know when it is time for a walk, when my nap should be over, and when food is necessary, but they have not graduated at the top of their class in knowing the day of the week. I’m sure they will learn how to read a calendar eventually, they are pretty smart.

Meanwhile, I’ll have to come up with asking everyone around what day it is, and hope they don’t lie to me.
