Let’s Do Our Part to Conserve Water

To The Editor:

I am writing regarding the article in a recent Fayette County Record, “Concerns Raised About Groundwater.” It seems evident that groundwater supply is likely a worldwide concern as the temps are higher and rain is below levels in many areas. I am not sure what will be in our future as far as water restrictions go. I started thinking about ways that we, as a family or families in general, could save on water usage.

These are some thoughts. We do not need to keep the faucet turned on while brushing our teeth. Just brush, spit and then rinse. That is easy to change. While I wait for the water to get “hot” in the kitchen sink, that tepid water just runs down the drain. So, I put a pot underneath and then use that tepid water to water plants. That is not too hard either. Now, we discuss the pottie. We take a poll to see if another family member can use the same flush. Of course, sometimes that would not be a good idea depending on what was deposited. Even saving a few flushes can make a difference. Running appliances with full loads is a water saver. That just requires a little planning. Oh yes, and scraping the dishes really well after a meal with a rubber spatula almost eliminates “pre-rinsing” dishes before going into the dishwasher. Shorter showers and smaller bathtub levels are easy to change a bit. Automatic sprinklers should most likely be turned “off ” at this time of year and run on a manual basis. Many systems are on an automatic cycle that may need to be changed.

What I am getting at here is that with a little thought and minimal effort we can conserve water for everyone. It can be a family project to see what other ideas y’all can come up with. Being proactive is better than reactive…. I hope the Fayette County Groundwater Conservation District will be proactive as much as possible as well.
