Let’s Not Start Banning Books Here

Let’s Not Start Banning Books Here

On Page 1A today you can read my news story about the book banning issue at La Grange Independent School District.

I tried my best to stay unbiased in that story.

But now this is the opinion section, and, for what it’s worth, here’s my opinion on the subject.

Monday’s speaker got applause from a lot of people in attendance for what she said, but I don’t think library book banning is ever a good idea.

Maybe the school needs to do a better job of organizing books to make sure kids are accessing books that are age-appropriate.

But to outright ban certain library books delves into very uncomfortable territory that I hope the members of the school board don’t cross into. Superintendent Bill Wagner who has been with LGISD for decades told me he can’t remember any instances of books being challenged and/or banned here before.

Let’s not start, because where does it end?

The American Library Association’s Office for Intellectual Freedom has been documenting attempts to ban books since 1990.

Below is their list of most banned and challenged books from the entire decade of 2010-2019.

It’s ranked, and I was shocked to learn the Captain Underpants series is No. 2 on the list. The kids’ series about two fourth graders includes a lot of fantasy battles, bathroom humor, and encourages kids to challenge authority. One of our boys didn’t used to be a very good reader, but it was that series that – finally – got him excited about reading.

There’s a few books on the below list that are really special to me too – and I bet if you look closely you’ll find some as well.

I found this quote from the guy, Dav Pilkey, who writes those Captain Underpants books:

“I understand that people are entitled to their own opinions about books, but it should be just that: a difference of opinion,” he said. “Instead of saying ‘I don’t think children should read this book,’ just add a single word: ‘I don’t think my children should read this book.’”
